APRIL
All week, I had been dreading Friday. When it came around I felt no better about it. Since Sunday night when I had kissed Riley and then ran off home, I hadnât heard from her. Nor had I tried to get in contact. Now I had an appointment booked with her.
It was possible she would not show up. In fact, that was likely. I wouldnât want to waste any more time on me if I were her. I might even be angry.
That morning, I got to work early. Riley was my first appointment. I tried to keep myself busy replying to emails and filing paperwork. I couldnât help but watch the clock on the wall.
It was possible she might not even show up. She had enough information now to continue her program without me. I designed it for her to take home to London.
At ten on the dot, I got a call from reception letting me know that Riley was there.
I plastered on a smile and walked out to the common area where she was waiting. She was standing at the reception desk looking at her phone. When she saw me and my fake smile, she raised her eyebrows and gave me a quizzical look.
âCome through,â I said. I motioned to her with my hand and she followed me to the consultation room.
Riley was calm. She sat in the usual chair she took. I sat down, realising that Iâd left her file in my office. I cursed myself internally for being so flustered that I forgot something important. I knew everything in her file by heart, anyway.
âSo, howâs your movement been this week?â
She still had the same look on her face. Half of her seemed confused with my conduct and the other half seemed to find it quite funny.
âThe same.â
âHave you played since Sunday?â
âYes, two rehearsals.â
Professional concern pushed aside my awkwardness from earlier. âYou havenât told Lu have you? About your handâ
She shrugged.
âIf you keep on using your hand in the same way, then nothing will get better.â I held her gaze to try to get the seriousness of my point across.
âIâve been doing the exercises every day,â she argued.
âLetâs see.â
I held out my hand, and she placed her right hand in mine. I straightened out her palm and then each of the fingers, one by one.
âSensation is normal?â
She nodded. She closed her eyes. I could make out each of her delicate black eyelashes. Looking at her pink lips, it reminded me I had kissed them only a few days ago.
âNot if Iâm playing,â she answered.
It was time for me to let go of her hand. I needed to work through some exercises with her and measure any change. Riley was silent, awaiting my instructions.
Not wanting to let her go I traced my fingers along the creases in her hands. Her blue eyes opened. Again, Iâd crossed the line from professional to something else. I should have let her go. I shouldnât have touched her like that. I let go and pulled away from her.
